The tradition of wishing upon a shooting star is thought to have originated in ancient Greece, presumably around the time of the astronomer Claudius Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD. Historically, these fleeting streaks of light are said to represent a moment of divine intervention as it is long believed that shooting stars appear when the gods open heaven to peer down at Earth.

Inspired by this phenomenon, as well as universal mysteries of the night sky, luxury Swiss watch and clock manufacturer Jaeger-LeCoultre has introduced the Rendez-Vous Shooting Star, presented in two distinct colorways. Their release signifies a contemporary interpretation of the brand’s 2022 Rendez-Vous Shooting Star watch—attempting to capture both the ethereal and superstitious magic that shooting stars symbolize into one romantic and enchanting timepiece. 

The watches—available in either pink or blue peony—feature a complex dial structure intended to replicate the effect of a shooting star when activated by movement of the wrist, and are concealed by beautifully hand-painted peonies when still. The pink peony variation features a delicate diamond-set rose gold bracelet with 625 diamonds across the entire watch (totaling 6.31 carats) while the blue peony model is paired with a cobalt blue alligator leather strap, showcasing 189 diamonds covering the case and dial only (1.47 carats), on top of sapphire glass.

Produced by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s in-house Atelier des Métiers Rares—over the course of 110 hours and nine lacquer shades for the pink peony, and 80 hours with twelve lacquer shades for the blue—the face of the Rendez-Vous Shooting Star watch illuminates the night sky with nearly 500 stars precisely applied—reaffirming the maison’s exceptional attention to detail and mastery when it comes to artistic affairs.
