At a time when digitization feels overwhelmingly inescapable, Jaeger-LeCoultre remains loyal to the analog. The Swiss brand unveils the Calibre 101 Chain, the culmination of centuries of innovation.

Calibre 101 Chain is the newest addition to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s series of high jewelry watches. Jaeger-LeCoultre aimed to focus on ornamentation just as much as the timepiece itself – the Maison’s design department conceived the form of the bracelet before the watch face, creating a timepiece that stands at the intersections of legacy, femininity, and innovation. The bangle, narrower than a fingernail, creates stripes of eighteen-karat pink gold, white diamonds, and HyCeram, a black high-gloss ceramic composite.

Calibre 101’s open dial is a breakthrough in horology’s centuries-long pursuit of miniaturization. Since the 19th century, Jaeger-LeCoultre, regarded as the Watchmaker of Watchmakers, has ceaselessly innovated to downsize timepieces without compromising reliability.

In 1929, LeCoultre patented Calibre 101, a refined version of their patent, Duoplan. Both mechanisms halved the space required in a calibre by stacking parts on top of each other. At a volume of just .2 cubic centimeters, Calibre 101 comprised 74 parts and barely weighed a gram.

Today, Calibre 101 remains the world’s smallest rectangular manually-wound, mechanical movement. Calibre 101 Chain contains the 5th generation of the patent, with 98 custom-produced parts. Each heirloom is the culmination of 40 hours of precise assembly, with only a few dozen pieces crafted a year.

Jaeger-LeCoultre's Calibre 101 line asserts the watch as more than an instrument for measuring time. Each minute detail of the Calibre 101 Chain represents nine decades of research and development, all packaged in a modern context. The result: a timepiece with intricacies that only emerge on a closer look.
