At Celine’s Été 2027, there was something wonderfully suspicious about the collection. The clothes themselves looked familiar, yet they were presented with a peculiar veneer of newness—as if being seen for the first time. During the sixth day of Paris Fashion Week, Michael Rider opened his Spring 2027 show with a black dress, slightly cinched at the waist and accessorized with yellow-tinted glasses. The looks that followed included hats hovering over the eyes, shoestring-thin belts, coats tucked into the crook of the arm, bandana prints, headbands worn on the forehead, and an enormous pair of extraterrestrial spectacles, making each look entirely singular.

Making ordinary garments appear innovative, Rider seems less interested in suggesting a new way of dressing than in rediscovering the exhilarating thrill of dressing itself. His show notes spoke of “positive obsession,” “big emotions,” “emotional dressing,” “high spirits,” and “being fabulous”—grand words describing clothes worn with a relaxed sense of mischief.

Models walked briskly down the runway, as if they had somewhere urgent to be. With hair obscuring their faces and handbags carried as parcels or clutched in their palms, the effect was not a mere demonstration of clothes, but of individuals caught in the chaos of daily life.

From corporate trousers, nipped waists, and harem pants to an array of midi dresses, the collection was largely rendered in black, white, and shades of beige. Yet Rider avoided austerity with injections of pink, green, yellow, and blue. A monochromatic look composed of varying shades of red; a strong-shouldered black coat erupted with lively florals, scuffed sneakers, and pants that ended above the ankle, meeting the socks.

Rider understands that fashion—and the art of dressing—becomes most intriguing when things that aren’t supposed to belong together suddenly do. This is where his kitschy elegance becomes particularly alluring. There is no definitive hero or heroine; each look belongs to a different personality with a unique goal, destination, and private fantasy. His Spring 2027 collection refuses to settle into one category, flirting with minimalism, bohemia, corporate wear, eveningwear, and the sophisticated eccentricity of a distant aunt.
