Forging sounds of catharsis since their 2020 debut, it’s safe to say that Los Angeles trio julie knows all about emotional turmoil. It’s unfair to pigeonhole them into one mode of songwriting, though, as their songs are ineffable portraits of the human experience and all of the dissonances that emerge in the pursuit of life. Their mode of expression is boundaryless and unclassifiable, rendering them unburdened by the perils of categorization. Staying true to their ineffability, julie launched ette 6 months ago, a subsidiary for all of their art projects that showcases their limitless artistic expression. 

This morning, ette just announced their forthcoming collaboration with Italian design studio GR10K. The collaboration marks ette’s inaugural foray into fashion, producing designs that materialize their tastefully obscure and borderline recondite sensibility. “We started ette so we can create objects focused on materiality, quality, forms, and silhouettes akin to what we seek in our own lives, with the intent to share that with others,” says julie vocalist Alexandria Elizabeth. 

The collaboration is a convergence between GR10K’s design palette and julie’s enigmatic artistry. Featuring bespoke skirts, scarves, tunics, and more, the collection is not merely a compendium of thoughtless merchandise. It’s deliberate, artfully crafted, and representative of the scrupulous effort julie and GR10K have undertaken to forge designs that look both meticulously constructed and authentically designed. Alexandria attributes much of the production of the collection to GR10K’s lead designer Anna Grassi’s unorthodox and ingenious design process: “her stoic, efficient, and pragmatic demeanor establishes the basis for what ideas are possible: how to progress the operation, use technical materials, and implement unorthodox fabrication methods.”

To complement the release, ette is also releasing a physical zine and a set of digital archives showcasing the intricacies of the project. The collection is set to release September 28th on ette’s and GR10K’s websites.
