For generations, PBS has established itself as a cornerstone of scientific education, providing public programming that fosters critical thinking and solution-based awareness. This legacy of scientific inquiry continues with Earth Focus, PBS SoCal’s acclaimed environmental documentary series now entering its sixth season.

In a preview for the new season exploring ecological solutions to safeguard Southern California resources, an interviewee reflects on the implications of fast fashion, “Everything has its cycle, but if it’s not done with a true consciousness, then you’re terrorizing nature.”

Earth Focus’s emphasis on consciousness feels particularly critical now. Earlier this month, the current presidential administration and lawmakers rescinded the $1.1 billion allocated to support public broadcasters like PBS and NPR for the next two years, alleging that such organizations perpetuate bias. This tension presents a question: How do we achieve “true consciousness” when research-based disciplines and educational institutions face increasing politicization?

Earth Focus suggests that consciousness is not just about transcending bias but rather understanding the complexity of our relationship with the natural world and searching for proactive solutions. The new slate of episodes, narrated by Los Angeles Emmy and Knight Foundation Award-winning journalist Dr. Cara Santa Maria, examines consciousness through different lenses: fast fashion’s reimagined alternatives and horticultural approach (as depicted in a series still herein), green canopies that naturally regulate rising temperatures, the extraordinary symbiosis of San Clemente Island’s communities, as well as the ambitious overhaul of a statewide energy infrastructure.

Amidst a polarized political and cultural landscape, Earth Focus reminds us that true consciousness isn’t a destination—it’s a practice. Within the fleeting twilight hour between what was and what could be, such clarity is not just worthwhile, it’s essential.

“All new episodes will be available to stream at pbssocal.org/earthfocus as well as on the free PBS App, and will roll out weekly on PBS SoCal’s YouTube.
