Presented by LA Opera, Ainadamar summons the myth and martyrdom of Spanish poet Federico García Lorca through flamenco expression, wartime scars, and the lingering ache of remembrance. Concluding it's run at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Conductor Lina González-Granados led the charge, breathing life into Osvaldo Golijov’s Grammy-winning score–a molten fusion of classical orchestration and Andalusian rhythm–paired with a libretto that burns as poignantly as it sings.
Ana María Martínez commands the stage as Lorca’s muse, Margarita Xirgu, while Daniela Mack embodies Federico García Lorca himself, the poet whose pen proved just as lethal as any pistol. This 1 hour and 20 minute performance is sung in Spanish with English and Spanish subtitles and is preceded by pre-show talks from Dr. Tiffany Kuo. But Ainadamar transcends language–it pulses with resistance, conjuring ghosts through movement and music. A fountain of tears, yes–but also a floodgate of reckoning.
