It’s quite difficult to imagine a world without art. Even without thinking of it, art is all around us: on the billboard you pass by on your way to work, on the cover of the book you’re reading, on the walls of the train or bus station you frequent, and even on the five dollar bill you use to buy your coffee. A world without art is bleak, and luckily, The Peninsula Hotels feel the same way. Through the luxury hotel's Art in Resonance program, artists from around the globe have been commissioned for over half a decade to create site-specific pieces reflective of the city around them.

With locations all over the world, they’ve worked closely with numerous emerging and mid-career artists. In collaboration with Contemporary Istanbul, a renowned art fair of the region, they’ve most recently commissioned Peruvian multi-disciplinary artist Grimanesa Amorós to create an exhibition for The Peninsula Istanbul.

Titled A Wave of Time, her exhibition consists of two separate installations. The first of which, titled "PASSAGE," is a decadent light sculpture located in the hotel’s historic clock tower atop the Passenger Terminal, an ode to the comings and goings it has been witness to since its original construction in the early 1900s. The second installation, "MARITIME," is a suspended structure of intricacies bellowing over the hotel’s lobby, paying homage to the nautical history of the location itself.

By interweaving history, modern digital art, architecture, and the human experience, Amorós uniquely adds depth, flair, and means for conversation to longstanding elements of The Peninsula Istanbul’s structure—isn't that what art is meant to do?
