It was a warm spring night in Beverly Hills, the kind that lends itself to soft lighting, open air, and fresh designs viewed in motion. For Otis Atelier’s Scholarship Benefit Gala, a private residence was transformed into an intimate runway and dinner party under the stars, bringing together patrons of fashion, design, and education in support of the next generation of talent at Otis College of Art and Design. The evening presented two first-generation students with scholarships in Toy Design and Fashion Design before turning the spotlight toward the student designers themselves.

Philana Trieu, a member of the Toy Design class of 2028, received the inaugural Mattel Toy Design Scholarship, while Silverio Indigo Vazquez, Fashion Design class of 2027, was awarded the Mandy Einstein Fashion Design Scholarship. Established in 1918, Otis College has long served as a launchpad for young artists and designers, with around 35% of its students being the first in their families to attend university and 98% of first-year students receiving some form of financial aid. In their acceptance speeches, Trieu thanked her mentors at the college, while Vazquez thanked his mother, whom he called his biggest supporter.

The evening also honored fashion designer Jason Wu with the Creative Visionary Award, recognizing his career in fashion and design. Wu spoke of his childhood in Taiwan, where his early creativity did not always fit neatly within convention, and of the family support that allowed him to follow his instincts anyway. In a filmed introduction, muses and peers, including Diane Kruger, Courtney J. Martin, Camilla Belle, and more, spoke to Wu’s mastery, artistic voice, and enduring innovation and elegance.

Guests including fashion mentor Katherine Ross, LACMA CEO Michael Govan, actor Camilla Belle, model Jenny Shimizu, celebrity stylist Elizabeth Stewart, Wolk Morais designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais, artist Gajin Fujita, influencer Aimee Song, and Libertine designer Johnson Hartig were also in attendance, lending the evening the feel of a Los Angeles creative salon.

After the awards, Otis College Fashion Design students presented original work developed under the mentorship of art and fashion industry professionals, many of whom are Otis alumni. Over the course of a year-long project, members of the senior fashion design class worked with Nike, St. John, FRAME, Activision, FIFA 1904, and more to create fresh, innovative collections collaboratively.

Following the runway presentation, guests sat down for a six-course Italian dinner from Angelini Osteria, the beloved Fairfax district trattoria, bringing the evening’s spectacle down to a tableside conversation with a side of tiramisu. Beneath the Beverly Hills sky, the gala became more than a showcase of student work; it was a reminder that talent, when met with mentorship, resources, and belief, can become something lasting.
