Boston’s Cartier boutique is now home to a captivating new art installation—Aquarium—by esteemed Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes. On view at 28 Newbury Street through May 17th, this mesmerizing display is part of Cartier’s ongoing initiative to unite fine art and high jewelry through the Artist Meets Artisan project.

The project brings together world-renowned contemporary artists and the Maison’s legendary craftspeople. Milhazes joins an illustrious group of past collaborators, including Alessandro Mendini, David Lynch, Takeshi Kitano, and Jean-Michel Alberola. She is acclaimed for her kaleidoscopic collages, prints, paintings, and installations, characterized by vibrant arabesque motifs, botanical patterns, carnival decorations, and lacework. These recurring elements allow Milhazes to create a distinctive, individualistic style that draws on both Modernism and Brazilian culture.

“Aquarium” is a striking, three-dimensional, eight-foot-tall suspended mobile composed of 15 strands of unused stones—diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires, amethysts, opals, Akoya pearls, coral, black jade, turquoise, and more. Each stone was meticulously selected by Milhazes, with the installation taking two years to complete, culminating in 2010. Since then, it has been exhibited in Miami, New York, and Paris.

Theatrical yet refined, and bursting with color and movement reminiscent of an underwater dreamscape, “Aquarium” artfully bridges the worlds of fine art and high jewelry. Reflecting on her creation, Milhazes says, “Fascinating elements dance in the space with different rhythms. We can observe all the details from up close, and a brightness and vibrancy from afar, as if observing an aquarium from a dream world.”
