Elegant and deadly, the panther moves like smoke through the air in the jungle’s midnight hush. Its paws kiss the earth without a sound, gliding between ancient trees draped in emerald shadows. It is this very spirit—stealth, grace, command—that Cartier channels in Into the Wild, the Maison’s immersive new experience unveiled at this year’s Miami Art Basel.

Into the Wild pays homage to the brand’s original Panthère de Cartier, Jeanne Toussaint. A force to be reckoned with, Toussaint enraptured Louis Cartier with her taste-making prowess and singularity, and was appointed Cartier’s Creative Director in 1933—making her one of the first women to rise to such a prominent position. Sitting at the helm of the Cartier universe, Toussaint’s tenure ushered in an expansion of the flora and fauna of Cartier, transforming the Maison into a sparkling jungle featuring none other than the emblematic panther—a motif that has shaped the brand’s DNA for nearly a century. Many of these designs are on display now in Miami, honoring her trailblazing taste and enduring impact.

A walk through Into the Wild is a voyage through Toussaint’s lush, carefully imagined ecosystem and the pieces that brought it to life. In one room, glittering necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and more—all featuring a sculptural puma relief—sit in a scene lush with vegetation, accompanied by adorned busts of the panther and other jungle creatures. In another, a bejeweled panther stands alone, accompanied only by dazzling imagery of its spotted coat—an invitation to revel in its poise.

Before your very eyes, Cartier's panther evolves over the years through various jewelry and watch offerings. In this evolution lies an ode to the Maison’s history and all who have shaped it. It’s a testament to how one symbol can continue to define a brand while endlessly reinventing itself.
