To be a mother is to be an author. To nourish another breath and rouse its soul with discreet, yet adorned force. To mother is to write a new story. With Authorne’s latest campaign commemorating the ornamented act of motherhood, sculptor and mother Rachel Bu’s “The Mother Chain” ensures that such bejeweled tales demand our attention.

Partnering with women across artistic practices—models Dilone and Mysty Kyd Heath, culinary artist Tara Thomas, architect Kiki Goti, and singer Sharleen Spiteri—the collection honors mothers and their dedication to acts of creativity. Inspired by family heirlooms and mechanisms of contemporary authorship, Rachel Bu’s direction takes root in familial traditions of motherhood itself.

While pregnant, Bu’s mother purchased for herself a gold necklace as an act of both celebration and proclaimed autonomy. The necklace was passed down to Bu when she became a mother. Henceforth, Authorne’s idea of a chain transcends mere pieces of metal linked together, bit by bit. For Bu, a chain is generational—a unifying expression of heritage, motherhood, and self-discovery, passed down from woman to woman, crafted from one story into another.

At the center of Bu’s mise-en-scène rests the Mother Chain—a sleek chain silhouette available in white or yellow gold. Despite bold symmetry reminiscent of an Art Deco period, the structure remains modern, fluid, and adaptable. Mother Locks complete the chains, resting naturally on the chest and defining themselves loudly as the sapphire, emerald, or pavé cœurs of the campaign. The lock acts functionally to stow away some prized possession, while also glowing as a door to the heart’s creative extravagance.

Bracelets steer towards the intimate scale, laying along the wrist with a subtlety that evokes quiet, yet pronounced, glamour. Ear loops, secured by a two-step locking mechanism, match the gemstones of the Mother Chain. Layered together, various combinations of the collection cohesively and intimately speak to one another, reimagining self-ornamentation as a practice of personal storytelling.
