Amalia Ulman | The Gallery @ El Centro
Los Angeles-based artist Amalia Ulman is set to premier her debut short film, Shanghai Fire, and solo show at The Gallery @ El Centro.
The exhibition marks the first installment in the new long-term exhibition venue’s Season One programming, organized around the theme of intimacy. The program will continue with works by Math Bass & Nevine Mahmoud, Flannery Silva, Alake Shilling and Pillow Talk by Fiona Alison Duncan.
Shanghai Fire is a meditation on separation, centered around a young woman (played by Ulman) on a 12 hour layover in China as she learns that her Malibu home might be on fire. The film is scored by Chicken, and produced with the help of Chen Zhou.
The artist’s solo exhibition also features a series of new photographs - burnt stills designed to evoke 1990’s Hong Kong movie posters. - and a collection of props used in the making of the film.
