People learn the most invaluable lessons of their lives during hard times. There’s usually something life-changing about going through a difficult experience and coming out stronger. Shannon Sperber knows that all too well. Despite knowing for years that she needed to do something to help others live better lives, it wasn’t until she fell ill that she acted on that desire.
Shannon works as a Somatic Release Breathwork facilitator, where she hosts individual and group sessions. According to Shannon, SRBW is all about harnessing the power of your breath to change your life. The technique allows you to use your breath to access your subconscious where patterns, thoughts and emotions from the past are located. Using breath, Shannon holds a safe space for her clients as they hyperoxignate the brain to reach their own subconscious. It is in this state that they can access old neural patterning and reprogram it with different messaging.
Her technique also gets the clients out of their thinking minds and into their bodies, allowing them to feel. This is important because, as Shannon says, “Many people are closed off from actually feeling.” The way she sees it, it’s only by allowing yourself to feel that you can heal. Shannon says her work is suited for anyone. She is committed to anyone looking to decrease anxiety/depression, get clarity, activate their own self-healing, take their business or relationship to the next level, or just discover who they are.
Shannon is especially concerned about entrepreneurs. She says this group’s nervous system often stay in a “fight or flight” mode, and they are usually stuck in their own minds. They carry a lot of pressure, stress and typically have past trauma. Therefore, she feels they need to connect to their body and heart, which is why she has a special interest in them. Shannon knows how true this is from her own experience.
In 2017, Shannon got very sick and was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. She couldn’t imagine living like that for the rest of her life, so she set out on a journey of healing. It was then that she discovered the power of the breath to regulate her nervous system. Using different modalities, including breathwork, she was able to completely heal herself and reverse her diagnosis. Five years later, she is now symptom-free.
Shannon’s journey inspired her to pursue the power of breathwork and bring it to the world. Years earlier, she received her B.S. in Exercise Science and graduated in 2001. She went on to get her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and finished it in 2008. Shannon worked as a home health geriatric PT for a while but then retired after having kids. In 2020, during the COVID quarantine, she became HeartMath certified. Therefore, Shannon had a good foundation, and she was well prepared for her breathwork certification later in 2021.
Shannon’s breathwork technique incorporates music and NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) commands. Hands-on touch accompanies these to enhance the experience and remove the barriers that could be standing in the client’s way. So far, she has worked with hundreds of clients and helped them improve their general well-being.
To Shannon, her practice is more than just a business. It is her way of impacting the world and making lives better. She says, “people as a collective need healing and a way to regulate their nervous systems. This breathwork forces you to think less and feel more. It’s hard to become the best version of yourself when you’re carrying past trauma, self-limiting beliefs, and subconscious patterns that you don’t even know exist.” When you are able to unload all the heavy weight that you carry, you begin to live in your truth and start to really enjoy life. You become more authentic and that is a beautiful thing.
