How was your household coming up?
It had its highs and lows but overall, I was blessed to have the mother I have along with her support. Where I’m from, it’s a lot of room for distractions and failure, but I knew I couldn’t let my mother down. I attended school and got good grades, but also had my moments where I lacked. In my environment, it’s considered the struggle, and everybody is trying to win and get to the money. I was fortunate to always have a home-cooked meal and clothes on my back. I had it better than others, but I was always aware I was blessed. Even though I felt that way my mother always made it known I can be better than good... I can be great.
What was is it like growing up in New York?
It’s a city where you have to know what lane you’re in or else you can get lost in the sauce. With my personality and being well-connected, I’ve had the luxury of always being in the mix for the right reasons and getting my name out there. People always asked why I haven’t moved to LA, I simply let them know that I feel the fake energy in certain parts and I won’t be fully focused on music the way I need to be because of how beautiful the scenery is.
I appreciate the season changes in my city. New York’s cold weather always puts me in grind mode and it makes me appreciate sunny weather even more. Drake once had a line where he said “Y'all n****s party too much man, I just chill and record.” It resonated so well with me because I literally built a studio from the ground up just to put the work in. I knew if I wanted my spot in this game, I was going to have to invest in myself and sacrifice things that were holding me back. New York also introduced me to fashion and it birthed my swag. I walked in many fashion week shows and stayed with the trend. Fashion and music always goes together. No matter where I land, the city is always in my blood for life.
Who were your biggest influences coming up?
If you know me, you know Meek Mill is my favorite rapper. I used to spend all my summers in Philly as a kid to spend time with my cousins, they introduced me to his music online. We knew all his freestyles and battles word for word. What I liked most about him is that I saw the come up and everything he rapped about was legit.
Another artist I’ve always kept in rotation as well was Tory Lanez. Like me, he raps and sings. I love the fact he doesn’t stay in one bubble and he’s able to be vibrant with his music, that’s the lane I’m in. I love to show both sides. The GOATs of this music era that we’re currently in though is Drake though. I always listen to his music to make myself a better artist and the consistent work he’s put in throughout out the years is absolutely incredible.
How did you come up with the album title and theme, Sunset in LA?
I simply was spending some time out there on a trip, thinking about an album title that fit the music I was writing at the time. The title dawned on me while I was listening to some beats a producer sent me while I was staring out the window. It was a beautiful sunset downtown LA where I was staying at and the theme hit me instantly. It had such a ring to it and I knew I wasn’t going to change the name of it. I was set to make this the brand going forward. Not only did it have a ring to it, but it matched the music on the album.
How did the song “Lucky” come about?
Lucky was made for kids and adults to embrace and sing at the cookout and family functions. I never really had a feel-good song before so I wanted to fulfill that spot and really make a song everyone can gravitate to. The song has a special vibe and it gives listeners a chance to think about all the things they feel lucky for. My videographer @Jt_wit_the_cam really brought my vision to life with the recent music video we dropped.
What can we expect from you going forward in your career?
My team and I are currently shooting more music videos. We want to shoot a video for every song on the Sunset in LA 2 before we even think about Sunset in LA 3. I want Sunset in LA 3 to be my mainstream album with features from big artists in the game. That’s the main thing the fans should be ready for! Everything else is in God’s hands, He always knows best.
