Last night (July 13) at Mack Sennett Studios in Los Angeles, Chicago rhymer and singer Vic Mensa was welcomed by a king. Head of Roc Nation management and rap titan Jay Z introduced Mensa to a full room, where the artist’s debut album _The Autobiography_, (out July 28 via Roc Nation/Capitol Records) would be played for media and influencer types. It’s not every day that Jay, who recently dropped his critically acclaimed thirteenth solo album _4:44_, dutifully supports an act like he did Thursday evening. And he let the crowd know that Vic is worth a few moments away from his wife Beyonce, three kids and whatever other business the mogul could have been tending to.
“Vic is a very special guy, hence our appearance,” Jay said, also referring the management heavyweight Scooter Braun (Justin Bieber) who was in attendance to assist the man of the hour. “Don’t do that industry shit,” Jay added, admonishing those who play cool and snobby at events. “I hate that shit. I don’t even play my album for industry people anymore. If you like the album, groove to it. Have a good time. He’s a once in a lifetime artist.”
Vic then stepped on stage, mentioning that his album is deeply personal—so much so that a casual acquaintance would be surprised at what they would learn about him on the project, which was executive produced by No I.D. (who produced the entire _4:44_ album).
From what he played, it certainly is not lacking in candor. Booming bass and charming keys often are the bed that lyrics about self-doubt, drug addiction and even suicidal thoughts lie on throughout the album.
_The Autobiography_ features Weezer, The-Dream, Pusha T, Ty Dolla $ign, SYD, Chief Keef, Joey Purp, Dreezy, Saul Williams and more. Pharrell Williams produced and guests on the intimate “Wings,” which dropped this morning.
The event was punctuated by a performance from Vic, who ran through a few cuts, backed by violinists and a DJ. Check out some additional shots from his set below.
