[KkCo](https://www.kkcostudio.com/collections/all) is the independent Los Angeles brand conceptualized and designed by Kara Jubin. With fluidity and versatility in mind, KkCo seamlessly weaves boyish and feminine natures, playful and sophisticated styles, and treads between form and function.
Friday marked the launch of their second collection for Holiday 2019. Exploring the juxtapositions of fantasy vs. reality, and natural vs. artificial, Rubin designs a mix of feminine cocktail attire and boxy, utilitarian workwear. With Jewel-toned organza, lightweight Japanese lace, and monochromatic checkered sets, the collection is whimsical yet practical for the holiday season. Flaunt spoke with Kara to discuss the collection in full:
**How would you describe the tone of your second collection?**
The tone of the second collection is a continuation of how we see ourselves: balanced between juxtaposing details. There is a sense of playfulness but still refined with moments of seriousness.
**What were your design inspirations and targets for this holiday collection?**
The inspiration for this collection stemmed from the idea of verisimilitude or the semblance of truth or reality. We wanted Holiday to feel like a fantasy but still, be grounded and realistic. This is where we dove into this idea of finding a balance between fantasy and reality.

**How do you explore fantasy vs. reality and natural vs. artificial with these pieces?**
This comes to play with mixing unexpected fabrics in familiar styles like Organza Aprons or Organza Pants. We went deeper with the concept of fantasy by introducing our newest dye techniques, the Isolated Rainbow dye — hand done using high pigmented dyes to create a supersaturated almost painting like finish.
The idea of fantasy vs. reality created the exploration of natural vs. artificial. We mixed natural fibers with ‘artificial’ details to create this sort of juxtaposition. We created pieces using 100% wool (deadstock from the Pendelton Mill) but added glow-in-the-dark patches; used 100% cotton canvas but printed a checkerboard all over it.
**What’s next for KkCo?**
In 2020 we are expanding our wholesale partnerships with new retailers — this is something we’re very excited about (stay tuned)! I’d also love to see our collaborations continue and grow —we have a few coming down the pipeline!
