On view at [James Fuentes Gallery](https://www.jamesfuentes.com/) until the first of March is the iconic feminist painter, Juanita McNeely. The first solo presentation of Juanita’s works at Fuentes, in collaboration with Mitchell Algus, features two major multi-panel works from crucial periods in McNeely’s work: Is It Real? Yes, It Is! (1969) and Triskaidekaptych (1986).
Born in 1936, McNeely moved to New York City in 1967 amidst the second-wave of the feminist and women’s liberation movement. This exposure profoundly informed her work at the time, conveying extreme contortions of the human body. Depicting the female figure with lightness, shadow, and a range of illuminated colors, McNeely provides a visual representation of her personal experiences with sexism, abortion, and infirmity.
