What makes a man? It’s a question burned into society’s mind since the beginning of time. A question which was once defined by a lack of vulnerability and one’s unwillingness to concede to their emotions. Yet this isn’t the 1950’s anymore. The world has changed, so has the idea of masculinity. Here, in 2019, in the wake of the #metoo movement and a culture’s overwhelming desire to rid the planet of toxic masculinity, this conversation seems more essential than ever before.
Ermenegildo Zegna, an integral purveyor of men’s modern clothing for over a hundred years, poses this same question for their Fall/Winter 2019 campaign. With help from two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and the multi-faceted artist Nicholas Tse, their campaign, titled #WhatMakesAMan, reopens this much-needed discourse. Instead of brutishness, they believe what makes a man is a dignity and openness to accept and embrace the contradictions of life, a willingness to evolve daily, staying truthful to one’s self all the while maintaining an endlessly changing perspective and attitude. These are the ethos for masculinity in our current age.
