[Carmen Neely](https://www.instagram.com/carmeneliz/) is back with her second solo exhibition at the [Jane Lombard Gallery](https://www.instagram.com/janelombardgallery/) in New York City. Her newest exhibition titled, _not a tourist_, evokes layered themes about being different and otherness through a tourism perspective. Carmen said, “It’s a sampling of other’s lives for pleasure and entertainment. It sits on the shelf as a trophy and commemorates a type of conquest,” in regards to human fascination of travelling to foreign lands.

As well, she explores her own personal experience with cultural otherness as a young black female artist in contemporary times through her abstract work. She states that othering “rejects your identity and denies you the right to claim a space as your own.” Through these paintings she is able to express her personal perspective, but desires for a universal understanding.

The paintings within _not a tourist_ are abstract, yet inspired by language. Each work is based on a phrase that was either said to her or that she overheard. Some of the phrases include: “Heard quitting and seen dancing” and “Breathe your own mask first.” These phrases range from humorous to serious, which may give the viewer a wide emotional experience during the exhibition. Through coded language, Carmen’s work allows the viewer to be open to their own “emotions, experiences, and interpretation” without ultimately knowing her true meaning of each piece.
_Not a tourist_ will be on view from November 7, 2019 to December 14, 2019 at the Jane Lombard Gallery.
