Located at the epicenter of classic charm and English elegance, The Stock Exchange Hotel is a desirable stay for seekers of luxurious fare, purposeful design, and fine hospitality. This hotel provides a memorable stay with no shortage of history or extravagant amenities, thoughtfully maintained to celebrate the artful traditions of its past iteration. Contemporary additions include Tender, a premier dining experience from chef Niall Keating, as well as the innovative cocktail bar Sterling. As a testament to its building’s esteemed status, The Stock Exchange Hotel has recently announced its upcoming expansion, to be built across the street from the original establishment and expected to open in early 2027.

Originally constructed in 1904 to house the Manchester Stock Exchange, the archival building remains an opulent display of Edwardian Baroque architecture, representative of its era’s optimistic attitude towards the city’s future expansion. The building’s position in the heart of Manchester’s city centre reflects its prominence within the industrial landscape of its origins, and its structure’s abundance of character and heritage have been intentionally preserved to honor the establishment’s ongoing legacy. After reopening as the Stock Exchange Hotel in late 2019, the building now functions as a 5-star luxury hotel, committed to extending the lifespan of the landmark by inviting guests to be included in its rich, pervasive history.

The Stock Exchange Suites, the newest manifestation of the establishment’s legacy, is set to house 95 new bedrooms, designed to meet the standard of its original location’s quality lodging. Designed by Autoban and crafted in a minimalist color palette, with luxuriant materials such as marble, brass, glass, and woodwork, the new Arthur Hope Suites, Bradshaw Suites, and Norfolk Suites strike an impressive balance between stylish relevance and traditional comforts. Further plans to introduce a new food and beverage facility are also in the works, alongside a boutique gym and spa which will bring an array of wellness offerings, including steam, sauna, and treatment rooms, to the hotel’s soothing environment. In addition to these improvements, The Stock Exchange will be extending the grounds of its Traders Lounge. The 1,000sq foot lobby area will be accessible for guests seeking a community space equipped for both co-working and cocktails. Above all else, amidst these upcoming developments, The Stock Exchange Hotel remains dedicated to providing outstanding guest experiences, widening their offerings of lush amenities to continue honoring the establishment’s extensive legacy.

You mentioned the speed at which the new plans were approved across the street––what do you think this says about The Stock Exchange’s reputation with the city? How about the can-do energy of Manchester at the moment?

It says a huge amount about the trust and confidence the city has in our hotel and what it has brought to Manchester since it opened. The response to it has been incredibly positive, from guests, locals, the hospitality industry, and the wider business community, which gives us the momentum to extend our offering with the 95-room addition. Delivering an outstanding guest experience, attention to detail, and warm hospitality are all central to our philosophy, and this will remain core to Stock Exchange Suites.

Manchester is an international city with more and more travelers from across the globe visiting the city, and with this comes a desire for high-end hospitality - a premium level of service, quality and experience. Norfolk House will help meet this demand and grow our ambition in this sector.

,Manchester has always been a city that moves with ambition and optimism. There’s a real entrepreneurial spirit here and an eagerness to be continually adding something meaningful to the city centre. The speed of the approval reflects that can-do energy. Manchester has always been a place that embraces reinvention while staying proud of its heritage, and the Stock Exchange Suites are aligned with that story.

How important is the history of the neighborhood when it comes to designing and redesigning the stock exchange guest experience?

It’s absolutely central. The Manchester Stock Exchange was built between 1904 and 1906, and the exquisite example of Edwardian Baroque architecture was purpose-built as a symbol of confidence in the future of a growing Manchester, which at the time was the 9th most populous city in the world. This amazing history isn’t something we see as a backdrop; it’s part and parcel of the complete guest experience.

We’ve always wanted guests to feel connected to that sense of place alongside a strong sense of the ‘now,’ and the beautiful design we have created inside immerses guests from the moment they walk through the door. The Hotel pays homage to the rich history of the Grade II listed building, both in style and spirit, with its history celebrated throughout, preserving its grand architectural features and retaining striking original details, from restored trading floor features, marble columns, stained glass, and an impressive domed ceiling to vintage photographs displayed in the hallways. The wallpaper patterns are actual fingerprints copied from banknotes found in the original vault of the former Manchester Stock Exchange before it was restored as the hotel. We worked with design studio Autoban and the interiors combine these historical motifs with original marble, brass, and woodwork to preserve the soul of the Grade II listed building. For us, it's about respecting the architecture, the craftsmanship, and the character that already exist, while introducing a contemporary sense of luxury and comfort.

We all know that Manchester is a city with incredible stories, and the Stock Exchange is woven into that history. We want guests to feel that authenticity, and sense of pride that we have in our surroundings and the city, whether that’s through the design details, the atmosphere, or the way the hotel connects people socially. The neighborhood has a richness and energy that can’t be manufactured, and preserving that is incredibly important to us.

What was most exciting about having the BRIT Awards in Manchester for the first time?

“It felt like a real landmark moment for the city. Manchester has such an iconic musical heritage. It’s in our DNA, so having the BRIT Awards here for the first time felt both exciting and, to be honest, overdue. It was great to showcase Manchester on the world stage, and the great success of the awards just sets the tone for more of these kinds of global events over the next few years and beyond.

What made it especially significant was the sense that Manchester is recognized for being a world-class cultural and creative city with huge momentum. Events of that scale bring incredible energy into the city centre, which was clear to see in the run-up to the event, and during the weekend it was on. It created a real sense of pride across hospitality, music, fashion, and the wider creative industries with the awards legacy and grass roots activity.

For us, at Stock Exchange Hotel, it was exciting to see the city buzzing with artists, media and guests, all experiencing Manchester at its best. There’s always been a confidence in Manchester that’s hard to ignore. We know exactly who we are, and the BRITs coming here felt like another major step and endorsement of that.
