Each November since 1999, Iceland Airwaves turns Reykjavík’s local bars, clubs, shops, and other gathering spaces into live music venues, inviting surfacing musicians from Iceland and the world to perform for an international audience. This week, the festival announced new additions to it’s lineup, inclusive of exciting artists like 54 Ultra (US), Bashar Murad (PS), and Silvana Estrada (MX).
This year, FLAUNT hosts a stage takeover at Art Museum–one of the several spaces that makeup the festival in downtown Reykjavík–on Thursday, November 6, which will include performances by synth forward, explorative electronic indie pop musician lúpína (IS), the experimental, genre-evading duo CYBER (IS, and another newly announced addition to this years festival), indie rock ensemble Valdimar, and electronic indie band FAT DOG (UK).
Iceland Airwaves is renowned not only for its ability to illuminate a varied curtain of rising talent, but in tandem with music the festival hosts a conference program with panels, presentations, and events that encourage community between those in attendance who come from all corners of the music business. Topics include, “The State of Live: Fickle fans, brutal budgets, and moving markets” with live booking agent Lucia Wade, listening to music in the modern moment with Music Affairs Director at Sony Interactive Entertainment and Playstation, Alex Hackford and award winning Music Supervisor Kelsey Mitchell, or “Boycotts, Backlash & Taking a Stand: Where Does Music Belong?” with the aforementioned Palestininan performer Bashar Murad in conversation with Cecilia Soojeong Yi and Alona Dmukhovska.
