Producing club music from lines of code in real time, DJ Dave is a bona fide tech-wizard who refuses to resolve herself to the artist/technophile binary. The L.A.-based musician has just announced her debut album, Hardcore Software, which is set to release on October 2nd via Mad Decent. Her newest release, “Next to You”, marks the third single release from her forthcoming album, and it is an ethereal, ecstatic track born of a happy accident.
Hardcore Software probes the tension between technology and the raw spontaneity of human behavior. She made “Next to You” after accidentally typing a comma into her live-coding software, Strudel, ultimately rendering the track’s brusque ‘power-fifth’ melody. The production of “Fail-Safe”— her second single released off of Hardcore Software— was also the result of a lucky mistake. “The lead melody itself was a random pattern that came from a c# minor pentatonic scale, and I really feel like it tied the whole track together. This one felt like a true collaboration between myself and my computer.” It’s this kind of Errare humanum est principle that permeates DJ_Dave’s practice– as well as her rejection of the blanched, soulless perfection of AI-generated music.

DJ_Dave has already forged an abundant path for herself in the realm of electronic music. She self-produced and performed her 2023 debut EP, Intercell, and has since remixed for Channel Tres, Tove Lo, and Pearly Drops. She opened for JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown’s joint tour in 2023 and has performed at iconic Brooklyn algorave spaces like Elsewhere and Avant Gardner.
This year, she is set to support horsegiirL on select tour dates for her upcoming Nature Is Healing tour, which will be running throughout North America and in Berlin, Antwerp, Amsterdam, and London.
