Music thumping. Bass booming. Individuals coming together to form one writhing mass of moving bodies, spirits running high, and feeling a sense of connection. This is what Skyline Festival has to offer. A place to listen, to dance, and at least on this particular weekend, to revel in the promise of encroaching springtime. Held in the arts district adjacent the banks of the Los Angeles River on the last weekend of February, Skyline Festival boasted a star-studded lineup and an unbelievably energetic crowd, all undulating to the world's highest frequency techno in the industrial Angeleno railyards.
This year, Berlin based rising star, DJ Gigola took the stage in front of a crowd of thousands—many of them eager fans, many others soon-to-be converts. Gigola, part of Berlin based techno collective Live From Earth, delivered on all expectations tenfold: as the sun set over the concrete bridge, Gigola took control, with a set punctuated with pyrotechnics and, of course, suffused high-energy that vivified even the most lethargic of crowds.
DJ Gigola is known for her genre-fluid, undefinable mix of techno, pop, trance, and percussive sounds. There is a particularly playful sense that she imbues in her work that has led her to astronomic rise in the past couple of years, paying careful attention to artistry while still using the lens that, after all, techno should be fun.
