Refuse Club Spring/ Summer 2020

by Morgan Vickery

Refuse Club, a brand sparking commentary of the #MeToo movement in China, was launched by Parsons grads Yuner Shao and "Stef" Puzhen Zhou. As the hashtag was banned from the Chinese social network site Weibo, the young designers decided to channel their outrage into the creation of political clothing.

Incorporating a mix of Chinese silk brocade and Western suiting has become the Refuse Club staple look. Paying homage to Eastern narratives is essential to Shao and Zhou while modernizing in their own fashion. While past collections were more obvious in their rebellion, the SS20 collection is an inspiration of youth in China's community of small villages. By tapping into the subculture of the youth's style and energy, the collection is an ode to their originality, without fear of criticism.
