Diversifying The Academy membership hasn't made the nominations more inclusive. The majority of older white men are still choosing their own to put in the running for big awards and are outnumbering any new blood of the last few years. In a year where there are so many stand-out features by women, about women, so few “made the cut” to even compete for an Oscar. One white woman, Scarlett Johansson got nominated for two awards and the only story that got nominated for Best Picture with all female leads is about white women, directed by a white woman. White women does not equal real diversity. Does The Academy care about being relevant anymore? Many online are complaining that The Oscars only likes to nod to Black women when they play slaves, in regards to Harriet and Cynthia Eviro. > the only non white actress nominated is cynthia erivo who plays a slave... the academy values black actors & actresses only when they play slaves, maids, working people who suffer constantly. really makes you think > > — liz ☀️ - rocketman deserved better (@favellare) [January 14, 2020](https://twitter.com/favellare/status/1217022323540340736?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) > Cynthia Erivo is nominate for playing a slave. What a damn shame. Source: [racismstillexists.tumblr.com](https://racismstillexists.tumblr.com) What concrete solutions can we actually implement when Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Lopez, Awkwafina and Lulu Wang are cast aside for the same old same old status quo? Here's an option- put more films about Women of Color into production. The Inclusionists (https://twitter.com/inclusionists) of USC-Annenberg who work closely with Times Up, headed by Dr. Stacy L. Smith, have shown us that films by Women of Color rank highest critically. ![](https://assets-global.website-files.com/62ee0bbe0c783a903ecc0ddb/6472bc0db85a752a30609c4a_image-asset.png)
