On Wednesday night, Lykke Li debuted her forthcoming album,  _so sad so sexy_ to an intimate crowd of friends and colleagues. This is Lykke’s first solo album following the formation of the supergroup LIV (the Swedish word for “life”), with Andrew Wyatt, Pontus Winnberg, Björn Yttling & Jeff Bhasker. In a Beverly Hills house overlooking the smog-blurred horizon of Los Angeles, Lykke and her collaborators lovingly introduced her follow-up to 2014’s _I Never Learn_.  The 10 track album begins with the “Hard Rain.” Li’s distinct, atmospheric soprano is paired with a driving, R&B-inspired beat that pushes this album closer to the realm of contemporary pop than her previous work. “Deep End,” the album’s second track, is produced by titans Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Jay-Z, Fun), Malay (Frank Ocean, Alicia Keys) and T-Minus. When this song started playing, the head-bobbing, hip-swaying crowd starting dancing. The track is masterfully layered with Li’s sultry vocals— I even saw a few people lip-syncing the words by the middle of the third chorus. The rest of _so sad so sexy_ creates is beautifully curated arc that never loses momentum after the first two tracks. It's a labor of love that is truly worth the wait. The album is set to release on June 8th.  * * *
