Juan Giménez
The clubs and warehouses may have shuttered their ponderous doors and unplugged their Funktion-Ones for the foreseeable future, but the internet’s fiber optic cables and DJ’s USBs have never had data flowing harder. Thus commences a new endeavor amidst these uncertain times: Flaunt Frisolation, a bespoke once-a-week dance mix to kick off the weekend; whether you’re about to cull your friends from your alma mater for your Zoom cocktail-hour; pregame for the upcoming Club Quarantine festivities; or initiate a lengthy jigsaw puzzle _alleine_, we hope Flaunt Frisolation can be a friendly windfall in your life.
This first mix is brought to us by FUXUS, (Darius Sabbaghzadeh) a DJ and writer based in Los Angeles who currently works in arts and culture communications and has written for _Resident Advisor, Flash Art, GROOVE, ArtReview_ and _aqnb_ in the past. Having lived in Berlin for a number of years, he picked up on the range of influences channeled by the city’s techno and experimental music scenes — and most notably the spirit of communal festivity that drives the culture there. This mix picks up on that spirit, starting off with a nod to EBM and industrial music as a sign of the current times, and then spiriting forward in a homage to the rave and techno scenes of the ‘90s and beyond. The cover art is dedicated to Juan Giménez, one of the most visionary science fiction comic artists who sadly just passed away recently.
