Recognized as the trailblazer in avant-garde and multimedia concepts, Japanese-American musician and renaissance woman Yoko Ono is being celebrated for her artistic contributions to the world. In tribute to the enduring impact of Ono’s visionary work, The Broad is opening the artist’s first solo exhibition, titled Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind, from May 23rd through October 11th, 2026. Concurrently, the museum announces a special end-of-summer concert on the East West Bank Plaza titled Yoko Only, featuring an extraordinary lineup of artists playing songs from Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band. Guest curator Yuka Honda will be performing in a collaborative group with American indie rock band Yo La Tengo and American guitarist Nels Cline. Featured guest vocals include Theo Bleckmann, Finom, Emi Helfrich, Satomi Matsuzaki, Maggie Parkins, Patrick Shiroishi, Sleater-Kinney, Sylvan Esso, Tune-Yards, and Rufus Wainwright. Yoko Only delves into the wide array of Ono’s work, from musical performance to her admirable influence in the 1960s Fluxus movement.

As the co-founder of the Japanese-American band Cibo Matto, Yuka Honda merges electronic sounds with abstract experimentation. Inspired by the multi-layering of hip-hop, Honda integrates cross-genre blending and mixed media instrumentation into her sound. As a previous collaborator with musical legends Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, and Nels Cline, Honda forges her music into an improvisational melting pot of art, ecology, and philosophy. Honda was chosen as the guest curator of the event for her intimate knowledge of Ono’s creative intentions and endeavors. Touching on the musical impact on the artist’s life, she shares, “Music was the first thing on Yoko’s artistic mind; it began during her childhood and grew through many stages of her life.”

Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind will carry visitors into the ecosystem of Ono’s work, and through its intent, unveil every corner of her world. Reflecting themes of introspection, liberation, and the conscious expansion of the mind, Yoko Only momentarily peeks into the world of her sound, cementing her place as a cultural visionary.
