Ending Shenghai’s Fall/Winter Fashion Week last night, Italian luxury fashion brand, Moncler showcased “The City of Genius”; a live immersive fashion event made up of 10 designer “neighborhoods” each comprised of a different collection and unique performance to accompany it.
The concept draws off of a 1960’s NASA study which found that 98% of 5-year-olds qualified as creative geniuses, while that number drastically declined to a mere 2% once they became adults. “The City of Genius” aims to tap back into that childhood imagination, dissolving the boundaries and limitations of the adult world.
The event featured the works of 10 different designers: Edward Enninful, Hiroshi Fujiwara, Donald Glover, Lulu Li, Mercedes-Benz by Nigo, Palm Angels, A$AP Rocky, Willow Smith, Rick Owens and Jil Sander, each inspired by different biomes, cultures, creative disciplines, and meaningful ideals.
The runways for each designers’ collections are as innovative as they are expansive, truly creating the illusion of being immersed in a comprehensive world when paired with their respective collections. From the light and childlike farms of Donald Glover’s neighborhood, to Hiroshi Fujiwara’s dark and desolate futurescape, Moncler’s “City of Genius,” explores the furthest corners of the imagination, transporting its star-studded audience back to a time when creativity was king.
To accompany the individual collections and performances of each designer, the event featured installation art from artist Xu Bing, along with an unforgettable performance directed by Henry Lau complete with dancers, musicians, sound and light displays, and a live performance from Yue opera actress Chen Lijun to finish the show.
