“My goal is to remain relevant in 100 or 200 years,” says Takashi Murakami, epochal Japanese artist known for his vibrant, stationary art in the Superflat style. “[My goal is to] transcend time.”

There are few avenues upon which one is able to meander through time. One is the way of art, which acquires meaning and value as it ages. Another is by way of the slow, careful distillation of alcohol, which acquires distinctive, complex flavors as years pass. Such is the case with visual art, as is the case of fine wines: a taste of vintage, a glimpse of an old work of art, burrows a hole through decades. The latest limited edition Dom Pérignon x Takashi Murakami collaboration encapsulates this idea. After all, Murakami says, “ When the label has aged, and I am gone, and my children are gone, I hope that people of the future, when they see it, will reimagine 2025 in their own minds.”

With this collaboration, Murakami has decorated designs for the DOM PÉRIGNON VINTAGE 2015, as well as the DOM PÉRIGNON ROSÉ VINTAGE 2010. The DOM PÉRIGNON VINTAGE is styled in golden characters, tall green peduncles with varying colored flowers, and bright smiles populate the canvas. This vintage features darker, down-to-earth colors that are reminiscent of the champagne’s more tactile and grounded taste. On the other hand, DOM PÉRIGNON ROSÉ VINTAGE 2010 features artwork of more brightly colored flowers, leaning into hues of pink and rose. These lighter colors also mirror the delicate taste of this champagne, easier on the eyes and the taste buds.

Dom Pérignon thrives from its livelihood of producing signature vintage champagne. Since 1921, every bottle has been perfected through the passage of time to achieve harmony between distinguished flavor and quality. It takes around 8-10 years for a standard bottle of Dom Pérignon to reach shelves, special editions taking even longer. With this, Dom Pérignon has a deep understanding of the delicate relationship between time, creation, and acquired value and taste. Both Murakami and Dom Pérignon are artists who understand that time is a tool used to make their creations greater, to make the champagnes sparkle and the flora bloom brightly.

While the designs themselves may lack physical depth, they carry a spatial and historical depth that goes beyond what the eye beholds. This is what makes Dom Pérignon x Takashi Murakami collaboration timeless, where designs extend far beyond the box and the bottle.
