With cosigns by Usher, Kid Cudi, and Skrillex, LA based beat producer [Kittens](https://www.instagram.com/iamkittens/?hl=en) exists among the elite DJs currently working the dance floor. Her mixes alternate between heavy raps and future electronic beat music.
Yet, Kittens, or Lauren Abedini, isn’t just a force behind the decks, she also puts her energy into uplifting her fellow female DJs. When she’s not producing, she’s serving time hosting [PWR](https://www.instagram.com/pwrxkittens/?hl=en), a non-profit DJ workshops for women by women, with proceeds going straight towards local women shelters or LGBT centers. Lauren hosted the biggest PWR yet, and the first one in New York City.
The workshop was held at the VICE offices and had 40 women in attendance.
The basics of DJing were taught, from identifying BPM to understanding song structures.
Roland provided Serato DJ-202 controllers and Mackie provided DJ monitors for everyone to practice on.
Everyone was partnered up, sharing a DJ station and having fun learning the basics of beat matching with and from each other.
Lauren demo'd the art of a smooth transition.
The end of the workshop concluded with a talk that included topics like what to expect to face in the music industry as a female DJ and how to properly prepare and deal with those issues.
Everyone left feeling connected and empowered with a new skill set.
Beats provided headphones for everyone to go home with and practice what they learned.
