Rapper Drake is an old fashioned saint in his new music video for “God’s Plan." The video released this morning features Drake strutting around the streets and shops of Miami, spreading joy--and loads of money. The video opens with the disclaimer: “The budget for this video was $996,631.90. We gave it all away. Don’t tell the label..." Video clips of Miami patrons dancing, talking laughing, fill the screen as the music revs up. People swoon when they see the good-natured Canadian MC, some even scream and fall to the floor. No matter what the reaction, people are generally happy to see Drake in their town. The video features Drake announcing to grocery store customers to feel grab anything they want, because everything is free. He also visits the University of Miami where a chorus of students joins him for a few bars. And of course, he donates money to the school. He also hands out $50,000 to the Lotus House Women’s Shelter, and even signs a cheesy, oversized check for the Miami Fire Department. The giving doesn’t stop there. The end of the video closes with a documentary style that gives viewers more detailed interactions with the patrons he gave money to. Lyrics “it’s a lot of bad things that they’re wishing on me” are juxtaposed with the overall joyous, playful mood of the video. Considering the recent tragedy that struck Miami, the song communicates the idea of bad things happening, but staying strong. Drake is usually known for his melancholy tunes, but today, he stands as a pillar of generosity and hope. Good on you, Drake, good on you.
