Sidewalk Champions by Suitcase Joe is a collection of street photography from Skid Row Street and is a visual ethnography of Los Angeles’s forgotten people. The photos captured by Suitcase Joe allow the viewer to take a closer look at the often gut wrenching inhabitants of Skid Row. Issues of housing inequality, skyrocketing housing prices and stagnant wages take the main stage through this series as Skid Row Street is the largest unhoused community in America and just a stone’s throw away from the decadent glamour of Hollywood.
Anonymous photographer and activist Suitcase Joe spent 9 years getting to know Skid Row and its inhabitants, gaining the trust and acceptance to intimately observe and photograph the inner workings of their daily lives. "The more time I spend in Skid Row the more I want to be there. The people are what keep bringing me back. I'm forever indebted to them for welcoming me into their world."
Since then, the establishment of the Suitcase Joe Foundation has aimed to serve the people of Skid Row with day to day needs and have provided support services for getting into long term housing. Proceeds from the sale of Sidewalk Champions will help support the Suitcase Joe Foundation and thereby directly aid the unhoused residents of Skid Row.
