Toss [FKA Twigs](https://www.instagram.com/fkatwigs/) a follow on Instagram, and you'll find the many activities of Tahliah Barnett. There's Twigs practicing gymnastics. Twigs in haute couture. Twigs with a sword in hand, giving the Chinese martial art of Wushu a whirl. Twigs perfecting the pole (so much pole dancing!). Attend her Magdalene Tour, and you'll find it all amalgamated into an unparalleled concert experience.
In a recent interview with Zane Lowe, she said, "Now that Magdalene is finished, I feel like I can have a new blueprint for how I want to be as a human, and how I want to live my life, and how I want to make my art." We love to see it. And at the first of two shows at Brooklyn's historic, ornate King's Theater, she proved that how she wants to make her art is breathtaking, theatrical, and wholly unique (as if the stunning album wasn't enough).
She tap-danced; she pole-danced; she wielded a sword to battle an invisible adversary. She oscillated between operatic, intimate moments alone on stage and clubby bits with back-up dancers grooving to her Nicolas Jaar-assisted beats—eventually revealing a band stacked on scaffolding behind the stage's red velvet curtain.
She seldom addressed the adoring crowd, but did take a moment to ask, "Has anyone ever had their heart broken?" Of course we have, and so has she (see: "Cellophane," which she closed with in gut-wrenching fashion). That fact is one of the most incredible sensations of taking in an FKA Twigs concert; to watch someone so seemingly not of this earth work through the romantic same pain we mere mortals feel on a stage is cathartic, and reassuring. We're not alone. But Twigs, honey, ya did it for us. You sure did.
