Remember back in 2009 when Uffie taught all the cool kids how to get low and do the tootsie roll? The electro pop star from the future released “Pop the Glock,” onto the unknowing masses and changed our lives forever, whether we knew it or not. She existed somewhere between Myspace’s golden years and the dawn of Youtube, a phenomenon which wouldn’t exist without the internet and social media. She was an anomaly, the club kid you so desperately wished to party with, and the fashion icon you didn’t know you needed in your life. The following year, she dropped her debut album _Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans_, which witnessed the unfathomable taking place before the collective’s eyes, she was now straddling the line between underground obscurity and mainstream pop. Alongside collaborations with indie heavyweights like Mr. Oizo and The Rapture, Pharrell Williams also showed up on the album, which gave the artist major clout. The sky was her only limit, but then she disappeared. In the ensuing years between 2012 and now, Uffie teased a few comebacks but nothing came fully into fruition. She teamed up with Charli XCX for the track “Babygirl,” and released a few one-off singles before vanishing into oblivion. However, the year 2019 is upon us, a time for great transition and change, which means Uffie has returned, prepared for a glorious comeback. She self-released an EP earlier this year titled _Tokyo Love Hotel_, which marks a triumphant return to form for the artist. Flaunt chatted with Uffie about her newest project, the space she inhabited when she wasn’t in the public eye, and, of course, fashion. Check out the interview with the queen herself. ![ Uffie Photographed by: Ashley Osborn ](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56c346b607eaa09d9189a870/1558656071125-DUTTA5UCB8ZDJ595U6FM/Flaunt-Uffie.JPG) Uffie Photographed by: [Ashley Osborn](http://instagram.com/ashleyosborn) * [](https://facebook.com/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.squarespace-cdn.com%2Fcontent%2Fv1%2F56c346b607eaa09d9189a870%2F1558656071125-DUTTA5UCB8ZDJ595U6FM%2FFlaunt-Uffie.JPG&t=Flaunt%20Magazine%20-%20Uffie+Photographed+by%3A+Ashley+Osborn) * [](https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.squarespace-cdn.com%2Fcontent%2Fv1%2F56c346b607eaa09d9189a870%2F1558656071125-DUTTA5UCB8ZDJ595U6FM%2FFlaunt-Uffie.JPG&text=Flaunt%20Magazine%20-%20Uffie+Photographed+by%3A+Ashley+Osborn) * [](http://pinterest.com/pin/create/link/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.squarespace-cdn.com%2Fcontent%2Fv1%2F56c346b607eaa09d9189a870%2F1558656071125-DUTTA5UCB8ZDJ595U6FM%2FFlaunt-Uffie.JPG&media=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.squarespace-cdn.com%2Fcontent%2Fv1%2F56c346b607eaa09d9189a870%2F1558656071125-DUTTA5UCB8ZDJ595U6FM%2FFlaunt-Uffie.JPG&description=Flaunt%20Magazine%20-%20Uffie+Photographed+by%3A+Ashley+Osborn) ![ Uffie Photographed by: Ashley Osborn ](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56c346b607eaa09d9189a870/1558656070783-D2FDDOSRLUQ44MUT23UT/Flaunt-Uffie2.JPG) Uffie Photographed by: [Ashley Osborn](http://instagram.com/ashleyosborn) * [](https://facebook.com/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.squarespace-cdn.com%2Fcontent%2Fv1%2F56c346b607eaa09d9189a870%2F1558656070783-D2FDDOSRLUQ44MUT23UT%2FFlaunt-Uffie2.JPG&t=Flaunt%20Magazine%20-%20Uffie+Photographed+by%3A+Ashley+Osborn) * [](https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.squarespace-cdn.com%2Fcontent%2Fv1%2F56c346b607eaa09d9189a870%2F1558656070783-D2FDDOSRLUQ44MUT23UT%2FFlaunt-Uffie2.JPG&text=Flaunt%20Magazine%20-%20Uffie+Photographed+by%3A+Ashley+Osborn) * [](http://pinterest.com/pin/create/link/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.squarespace-cdn.com%2Fcontent%2Fv1%2F56c346b607eaa09d9189a870%2F1558656070783-D2FDDOSRLUQ44MUT23UT%2FFlaunt-Uffie2.JPG&media=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.squarespace-cdn.com%2Fcontent%2Fv1%2F56c346b607eaa09d9189a870%2F1558656070783-D2FDDOSRLUQ44MUT23UT%2FFlaunt-Uffie2.JPG&description=Flaunt%20Magazine%20-%20Uffie+Photographed+by%3A+Ashley+Osborn) **In 2012 at the height of your career, you took a six-year hiatus from music. What caused this break from the industry?**  Between the loss of my mother and expecting a second child, it felt like time for a break.  I had been touring from the start of my career as a teen, and needed a minute to focus on my family and grow up away from the industry.   **What were you able to accomplish while away from music?** I think the pause was a very essential part to my project.  The growing was key, as was the silence to tap into a new wave.  **What do you hope you can achieve with this comeback?** Keep it real.  Make art that impacts peoples life for the better.  Whether its just a dope song that makes their night better, or one that they identify with that lets fans know they are not alone.   **It seems like you became an overnight star when you dropped “Pop the Glock,” back in 2010. Tell us about how you found success… Was it as “overnight,” as it seems?** No, :Pop The Glock” originally  came out and went pretty viral in myspace a couple years before that.  But things grew really fast… I think because it was never the course I necessarily planned for my life it was a bit of an adjustment- but a magically one at that! **Your live appearances alternate between performing and doing the occasional DJ set. We all know your merits as an artist who writes and performs their own songs, but what do you bring to the table when you take the sticks as a DJ?** My DJ sets are about the fun and energy -and people loosing themselves and dancing like they would at a house party.   **What are some of your go-to songs which are guaranteed to get the crowd moving when you are DJing?** I play a pretty eclectic set…  I am not as concerned about whats currently cool and everyone else is playing.  I like to surprise the crowd, Dizzee Rascal, to Animal Collective, to Ciara, to the specials. **Before your music career launched you into the stratosphere, you were studying fashion and, eventually, released your own line with Diesel. Tell us about your connection with fashion, specifically your relationship with denim.**  Collaborating with Diesel was a great experience.  My dad worked in fashion, on the business and textile side.  I remember as a kid going into the “office” and seeing jeans being lazored and stone washed.  I left high school early to start fashion studies, but couldn’t maintain it as touring started taking up more and more time.  Denim is such a classic and timeless material thats quite versatile.   **Why do you feel its important designing and producing your own clothes?**  I want to build a universe, and my music is the soundtrack to that world. Clothes are an extension to that, a uniform if you will, that helps it come to life.   **Is there any chance we will see any more Uffie/fashion brand collaborations in the future?** Definitely :)  **You recently helped co-write the title track from P!NK’s 8th studio album _Hurts 2B Human_. How did this collaboration come about?**  I went to my first writing camp last year, and it was probably one of my favorite experiences of my career.  It was in the desert with some of the most lovely and talented people I’ve ever met.  Hurts 2B Human was a song that was started there, along with Teddy Geiger, Scott Harris, and Xplicit. It was my first experience being on the songwriter side, and it was really magical to hear P!nk and Khalid bring this song to life.   **Do you continue planning on writing music for other artists?**  Yes, its something I’ve been continuing this year.   I of course love writing for my project, but getting out of my own head and into someone else’s is fun and refreshing.  It’s creating a nice balance.  **You’re a proud mother. Has growing a family influenced your lyrics, or your music, in any way?** That I am...I have been blessed with such incredible children!!  Becoming a parent makes you grow up in ways you otherwise may not necessarily.  I think that maturity has effected my music.  I am also much more aware of the energy that I am putting out into the world. **You’ve already had a monster year with this comeback and its only May! What do you have planned for the rest of 2019?** It’s been an exciting one!  Keep an eye out for a couple gigs and count on the music continuing to flow :) * * * Photographed by: [Ashley Osborn](http://instagram.com/ashleyosborn)
