From a Takashi Murakami exhibition, to a collaboration with Justin Bieber, to a recent appearance in a Calvin Klein campaign, it’s been a busy summer for global pop sensation Billie Eilish. Following the wave of recent success, the 17-year-old singer is now taking center stage in luxury leather goods brand MCM’s genderless Autmn/Winter 2019 campaign, alongside Childish Major.
The campaign, the first under the guidance of MCM’s new global creative officer Dirk Schönberger, is an aesthetic representation of the brand’s customers’ fluid, playful outlook. The collection’s colorful photographs, which picture Eilish’s donning oversized jackets, bucket hats, and fanny packs featuring MCM’s logo, are a reflection of the campaign’s message. “She’s a game-changer,” remarked Schönberger in a recent interview with WWD, while on the subject of the superstar’s involvement. “Not only is she disruptive, but it also feels like she can’t be corrupted. It’s not a marketing trick: She is that person. She really stands out in the current music scene.”
MCM’s new imagery features Eilish and Major both wearing the same clothing and accessories, while displaying different forms of self-expression through their unique styling. "You don't have to be a boy. You don't have to be a girl,” remarked Eilish to WWD. “You don't have to wear something specific to that title. You know, you can be anything at all."
