Promises: Through Congress, filmmaker Trevor Tweeten’s visual meditation on Julie Mehretu's Congress and Luaka Bop’s Promises, the composers new album which features Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders, and the London Symphony Orchestra. The Broad in Los Angeles and The Whitney in New York City will co-host a virtual premiere of the film.

Tweeten worked closely with the artists to create Promises: Through Congress. Working on location at The Broad during the winter of 2021, the filmmaker was surrounded by the works of Mehretu from her current exhibition, on view at The Broad through August 8 . Congress, the work explored in the film and featured in the exhibition, also features on the jacket design of Promises.

Tweeten says, “The film functions as a single sustained gesture, a journey emerging from the intimate details and texture of the painting. I was interested in the way the slow nearly imperceptible zoom had the potential to create a suspended state, opening up new possibilities of experiencing Congress through time. The trajectory of the film mirrors the shape of the music, ever expanding, slowly building momentum to points of reveal and release.”

You can view Promises: Through Congress on April 24 at 3PM EST/12PM PST on whitney.org and thebroad.org
