It’s official: the 80s are back. Sweeping in with the bright colors and shoulder pads, is Queens-based artist Glassio. On “Nobody Stayed For The DJ,” he combines the synth-pop sound of old, with the emotive, singer-songwriter soul currently dominating the charts. ‘Nobody Stayed For The DJ” is his second single. It comes off the heels of his first song, “Are You Having Fun Without Me?” which was released in January. The two tracks are the first taste of his upcoming debut album, set to be released this summer. On the new song, Glassio said, “It started with a very specific narrative that I thought was pretty funny: a DJ having an emotional crisis in the middle of their set because either everybody left or nobody came out to see them. As relatable as that specific situation is to any musician, I think it grew into something more open-ended.” His intuition was right. The plight of the lonely DJ speaks to a widely known vulnerability, the one felt when putting our creative efforts into the world. What could ever be more terrifying than the potential for rejection? “I realized when I was close to finishing it, that it was about being misunderstood and the fear of being forgotten. I think it also tugs at a DJ’s relationship with the world and how it can be a very isolating, yet, at the same time, connected dynamic. I wanted to tap into what nightlife would be like in a dystopian universe — maybe nobody stayed for the DJ because it didn’t feel right to be dancing,” said Glassio. You can listen to the song below, and if you feel so inspired, it would be perfectly alright to dance along. * * * Photo credit: Rachel Cabitt
