The Warbly Jets' music has revived a UK rock feel from decades and eras ago. Not only do they look the part with shaggy manes and leather jackets that recall The Beatles, but they also nail the sound. Their debut self-titled album, which was released last year, was full of defiant and dynamic DIY hits that combine the sensibility of punk and with the melodic power of pop and rock. The band, composed of Sam Shea (guitars, lead vocals, production), Julien O’Neill (keyboards, guitar), Dan Gerbang (bass, mastering) and Ethan Snyder (drums), has now returned with another striking track.
Their new single “Inhuman Emotion” hits the ground running with frenetic guitar feedback, psychedelic samples and synth, incessant drums beats, an in-your-face yet casual bass line and far out vocal harmonies. According to Shea, the song utilizes some outlandish production techniques such as blown out guitars, a 25 cent microphone from a flea market, 5 different drum kits, and jazzy drum solos. “Basically anything I’ve ever been told not to do," he says, "I’m doing.”
Not only are they breaking the rules of recording, but they are defying the realm of time and space; they wrote, recorded, produced, mixed and released the single in only ten days. It is this very “inhuman” amount of creative energy that inspired the energy of the song. “There’s something magical about music and the creation of it," Shea says. "The mystics of that have always attracted me. This is the inhuman emotion I’m talking about.”
This unthinkable pace is just part of the package for the Warbly Jets who work best when they are running on fumes. The band has been busy since their last release, producing and writing for other groups, and touring with Oasis’ own Liam Gallagher. Now, their creative juices are flowing and they aren’t thinking about closing the fountain anytime soon. The band will hit the road at the end of the month with American, Asian and European stops along the way.
