“Shakes,” the first song off [Maddie Jay](https://www.instagram.com/maddiejaymusic/)’s debut EP, “Mood Swings,” exposes the inner thoughts of an anxious young adult. The song was named after the hand tremors she sometimes experiences during periods of particularly intense anxiety. Despite the subject matter, the song sounds far removed from the tight, unsteady feelings we associate with stress. Rather, it flows effortlessly off the beaches of LA, where Jay is currently stationed. In the accompanying video, Jay can be seen rocking out with free-flowing locks and an enviable look of California-cool. She says that this project was inspired by the historical acts of the West Coast, including Harry Nilsson and the Beach Boys. “I imagine that there a lot of people with anxieties running high these days, and I hope that there is something in the lyrics that will feel familiar and helpful. Or at least, I hope they can blow off some steam by headbanging in their apartment to it,” said Jay.
