The creators remain anonymous to the public, in hopes that listeners are uninfluenced by a personal image in today’s increasingly self-obsessed society. Most known for their refined visual aesthetic, the group received much praise from the debut Big Beat single ‘[come thru](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6BNb0jQjrw)’ released last month. This month, ilo ilo will roll-out a five-piece video content series, “Patterns,” with themes of young love, heartbreak, adventure, and self-realization before the forthcoming EP, set to release on May 31st. With the premiere of the first “Patterns” video, we spoke with ilo ilo on their inception, autonomous entity, and video series. **_How did ilo ilo come to be?_** ilo ilo is a multi-media art project. We create works that capture the stories and emotions surrounding youth and young love. Whether that be a song, a film, an animation, a voicemail— the stories manifest in many different forms, so we make all of them.  **_Mysterious to the public, ilo ilo acts as an alias to remain anonymous. What influenced this decision?_**  Our identity as individuals isn't necessarily relevant to the art. Sometimes, the way people decide to open up to art, or consider it relevant to them, is so much based on them identifying with the artist as a person, or a typeof person. As a society, we're obsessed with image. By removing ourselves from the equation and making the "image" of ilo ilo a decentralized concept, we hope to allow the work to shine through and live as its own, autonomous entity. We wanted to explore allowing the listener or viewer to be uninfluenced by what they think we should or shouldn't look like, what our background is, where we come from, all that. **_Tell us the concepts behind your video content series._** "Patterns" is a series that explores the cycles of romantic relationships. We wanted to identify and distill the most visceral emotion in each phase of a relationship, and zoom in on it in an abstract way. Beautiful and tragic moments seem to repeat over and over through all of our lives, so a hyper-condensed film series seemed like an interesting format to tell that story. The episodes are short so we can move between the specific emotions quickly, and magnify the effect of the pattern.  **_What theme encompasses the first of the series?_** The first episode is called Uncertainty. It focuses on the moment just before allowing yourself to open up and become vulnerable to another person— The decision to cross that threshold. ![](https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/62ee0bbe0c783a903ecc0ddb/6472b63654b38efed0f1eebc_image-asset.jpeg) * * *
