Blade Runner Black Out 2022 is an animated short film that takes place in Los Angeles in 2022, serving as the middle story for its prequel Blade Runner set in 2019 and its sequel Blade Runner 2049. Denis Vileneuve, director of Blade Runner 2049, revealed that he wanted the viewer to be informed about some key events that went down within next 30 years leading up to 2049, before the start of the short film.

The animated short was written and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, the director who also brought us Cowboy Bepop and Samurai Champloo. And if that wasn't enough, the music for the anime was scored by Flying Lotus, who also revealed that collaborating with Wantanabe has always been a dream of his@flyinglotus.
