Summer simmers off the asphalt, heat haze warping the green-and-white street signs. Laurel Canyon residents croon through the radio, their voices fighting for space alongside the static. Flared denim cuts litter the sidewalks. It’s California’s past, the enmeshing of the chic lines of the 60s and the glitter of the 80s as a coarse transition. Through it all, fashion evolves, reflecting the tastes of each era.

MOTHER recently opened its flagship store in Beverly Hills, an homage to the shimmering vibes of California nostalgia, with a celebration hosted by founders Lela Becker and Tim Kaeding. Fluid rails of clothes and bright red carpet transport guests into a futuristic past. Interior amenities like the conversation pit and vintage telephone booth, decorated with letters from MOTHER’s friends, encourage connection with other guests, allowing shopping to become secondary. DJ Mei Kwok created a lo-fi, but upbeat soundtrack to the night, continuing the merge between modern and retro.

The guests themselves embodied MOTHER’s aesthetic, clad in denim and retro styles. While some chose to wear MOTHER denim, others celebrated with corduroy and lettermen’s jackets. These, paired with the vintage Chevrolet El Camino parked out front, curated a night about the past’s glamor. In line with MOTHER’s tradition, the end of the night brought late-night pizza served from the El Camino. Alongside the opening, MOTHER launched its newest capsule, Dazzler, a retrospective look at 80s fashion, with select pieces exclusive to the Beverly Hills storefront.
