You ascend into myth, and then you descend into sweat and mirth. That is the rhythm of Castle Ferreira. Above ground in San Diego, the courtyard feels like a medieval dream, all stone and shadow, fog, and drifting piano notes. People stand frozen on pillars like statues pulled from the Pantheon. Underground, the fantasy doesn't break. It deepens.
Downstairs, things turn into a modern bacchanalia, with the speakeasy ambience and thundering bass welcoming you to the night’s theme, “GODS,” a theme that the crowd of about 300 people took to heart, arriving dressed like deities from every tradition. Indigenous symbols, Mexican folk saints, Greek marble come to life, and future gods in metallic fabrics. No one was half-hearted. You could feel the effort in every stitch of every costume because “dress to impress” is just part of the appeal.
The performances began without announcement. Lilyisthatyou appeared as a surprise, Tommi Aura followed, and Brenna Jordan, alongside Evan from AS IF, kept the momentum going with sharp pop energy. Then Nessa Barrett stepped up as headliner. She performed three songs, including "Pornstar."
Once the live vocals faded, RuPaul's Drag Race’s Kerri Colby grabbed the decks. The anthems she played turned the basement into a sing-along that did not need a microphone. Then FLABBERGAST took over with a tempo that did not let up. The crowd stayed until the speakers went quiet, and the conversations and giggles were the only things left hanging in the air.
You need an invitation or referral to get through the doors, and the people inside come fully committed to the fantasy, ready to lose themselves in the experience. Nights at Castle Ferreira are each one of a kind, and it has established itself as a standout presence within San Diego’s nightlife scene.
