LACMA | Muse 'til Midnight Experience

by Christopher Andrew Armstrong

This Saturday, September 7th, in case you didn’t know, is the official slash unofficial opening night for the fall Art season in Los Angeles. If you visit your go-to art gallery listings, then you’ll realize almost every major Gallery in the city opens their doors for an opening reception. The list is exhilarating and definitely FOMO inducing. There’s no way one person could possibly show their face at each premiere so cool your horses, it ain’t happening. This writer’s advice is to find something worthwhile and stay there.

You can’t go wrong if you plan your night around Muse ‘til Midnight, the annual dance and art celebration taking place at the LACMA. Besides being the city’s premier destination for all things art, on Saturday night the space transforms into a dance and house music mecca, featuring performances from essential beat makers like Detroit techno obsessive Actress, Julianna Barwick, Ana Roxanne, and Octo Octa.

By keeping their doors open until (you guessed it) Midnight, attendees get a rare chance at scoping the museum after hours. Inspired by The Allure of Matter: Material Art from China (June 2, 2019-January 5, 2020) the music is curated by independent record label Ninja Tune and local legend Dublab. The dance party stretches out over three stages and there will be immersive sound and visual installations. A complete sensory experience.

When you’re not waxing the dance floor, or sipping a complimentary cocktail at the SHOWTIME® space, indulge yourself in late night art. If the music wasn’t enough to persuade you, LACMA also plans on allowing visitors access to their groundbreaking exhibitions such as The Allure of Matter: Material Art from China; Beyond Line: The Art of Korean Writing; The Invisible Man and the Masque of Blackness; Mary Corse: A Survey in Light; and Christian Marclay: Sound Stories.

Long story short, Muse ‘til Midnight might be the coolest happening in LA on an evening stacked with events. It takes place from 7:30 p.m. to midnight with tickets available here. See you there.
