Both a recording artist and activist, River stands for all things sustainability and female empowerment, which bleeds into her music wholeheartedly.  “We Are The Youth” serves as the ultimate protest anthem, leading the way for this new generation of advocates and activists fighting for change. Stemming from River’s long-lasting passion for climate change and environmentalism, it was late 2019 when she was performing at the School Strike 4 Climate rally on Gadigal land in Sydney that she first got the idea for the track. Speaking on the song, River states, “‘We Are The Youth’ was inspired by the multiple global and local social movements that seem to be coalescing all at once, the feeling that leaders aren’t acting quickly enough to dismantle old systems. Instead , younger generations are leading in their absence. It’s about the kids staying up at night organizing climate protests, the force of the #MeToo movement, the outcry for the respect of black communities, and the call to defund racist, corrupt systems of policing and law enforcement.” River wrote the song to express the truth about how she was feeling in the specific time and place, hoping that it helps to articulate in song how so many others are feeling too. “We Are The Youth” is a reminder to the masses that they are not alone, and to keep fighting. There’s so much power in the hands of this generation.
