With the passing of time, we might forget that what we may now know by heart was not always second nature. And sometimes, what is hard to express is the only thing worth expressing. Maybe if we liked things a little less, the notions we love would be easier to describe. See here, Marie Davidson lead only with intense sincerity and surrendering to the ebbs and flows of perpetual motion.
For over a decade, Montreal-based electronic music performer, DJ, singer and songwriter has created a unique sonic identity that traverses the techno pulse of Berlin to the gritty edge of UK bass. Warm electronic sentiments and thrumming bass are held together by softly-said assurances, anchored in tender confidence and a quiet strength. Davidson recently released “Y.A.A.M. (Your Asses Are Mine), ahead of a forthcoming album.
Ahead of her show at Los Angeles’ And Always Forever this November at The Echo/Echoplex, Marie Davidson, releases live performances from Rally Festival wherein her voice cuts through the dense air with sharp precision. Marie shares, “The videos are from my last show in London at Rally Festival. It was special, the stage design and the crowd were especially hot, despite the massive rain they had that day. When people come out like that, you know you’re playing for a real tough crowd of people who really want to be there."
And Always Forever will also feature heavy hitters the Swirlies, Schwefelgelb, Loveliescrushing, Astrobrite, Croatian Amor, and more at the Echo/Echoplex on Saturday, November 9th. The first of its kind, AAF is a love letter to the Los Angeles music scene, wherein dense, turbulent, and exposed soundscapes of shoegaze will marry into the pummeling percussion and pervasive force of today’s experimental techno.
You can find tickets at andalwaysforever.com.
What do you hope listeners take home with them after AAF, and what are you looking forward to?
I hope listeners go back home feeling they’ve lived something meaningful, whether it’s from the music they heard or the exchanges they had throughout the time they were out. I hope they feel they’ve engaged with others in the present, away from their digital lives for a few hours. Most of all I hope they have a great time.
What can you say about music and its longevity?
Music has always existed and I believe will keep existing as long as their is life on this planet. Nowadays music has become a commodity, often related to advertising, fashion, branding and so on. Nevertheless, it keeps inspiring generations after generations and haven’t lost its subversive power, when executed with passion. To me music is a language in its own rights, sounds can express emotions and states of mind that go beyond words.
What do you hope lasts forever?
Nothing lasts forever. I have no hopes of anything lasting forever, because I know that if I did I would only end up deceived. In the meantime, while I’m here, I try to enjoy what there is to enjoy, keeping in mind that it might disappear one day or an other.
