As Communists were exposed and forced out of jobs during the Red Scare, another cleansing was taking place in its shadow. Director and producer Josh Howard explores the narratives of the homosexual men and women who were ousted during the “Lavender Scare”. In an era far more accepting of diverse LGBTQ+ identities, Howard was able to examine just a handful of the 10,000-plus people who were forced out of their jobs from the McCarthy era until 1995, when termination on the basis of sexual orientation finally halted.
