Bob Mizer at M+B Photo
M+B Photo will be hosting Naked Ambition, a photo exhibition by the works of Bob Mizer, a renowned photographer of the 20th century whose photographs highlight gay culture and homoerotic art. The gallery will showcase 30 unseen images for the artists first ever solo exhibition. The exhibition will be open to the public from June 23 to August 18, 2018, with a reception on June 23 from 6 to 8pm, located at M+B Photo at 1050 North Cahuenga Boulevard in Hollywood.
Mizer began his career and interest in the male physique at the age of twenty-four in 1945. He drew inspiration from the bodybuilders at Muscle Beach in Venice, California, where he found his love for photography and creating art emphasizing male intimacy. Mizer‘s photographs were seen as political and offensive, especially at a time when homosexuality and male nudity were taboo. Because of his erotic images and intimate photographs, Mizer ended up behind bars for his work. His time in jail, motivated him to continue to push artistic boundaries and founded the magazine Physical Pictorial in 1951, which featured the work of other homoerotic artists.
Mizer was one of the only photographers mastering the art of the male physique, his work later impacted and influenced artists such as David Hockney and Gore Vidal. Mizer’s controversial work is now celebrated and inspires future artists to break societal norms.
