There’s a maturity in Genevieve Stokes’ voice that makes it hard to believe the singer is just now entering adulthood at 18 years of age. It’s unclear whether that maturity is the product of tone, or the affecting honesty with which Stokes handles the subjects of her songs. Either way, it leaves us with music that pulls at all the right cords.
Her latest cut, “Running Away,” reflects on the terrifying excitement of new love. Of the song, Stokes said, “I wrote 'Running Away' just to get some things off my chest. I didn’t really think much of it at the time, but looking back, it was a very important time marker for me.”
With its soft, lilting melody and poignant lyrics, “Running Away” runs through you like hot water, warm and fleeting in your chest.
